ESPRIT DES ALPES BY CAILLER FIGHT CHILD TRAFFICKING IN WEST AFRICA

August 27, 2001

Disturbing stories of child trafficking in West Africa recently raised questions about the origin of Albert Uster Imports Esprit des Alpes line of fine Swiss couvertures and chocolate products.

The chocolate manufacturer of the brand Esprit des Alpes, Cailler of Switzerland, does not employ child labor in any form, and is against all exploitation of children. They comply with the relevant ILO conventions and do not provide employment to any children before they have exceeded the legal age of compulsory education in their respective countries.

In addition, Cailler is a working member of the UK government Task Force charged with identifying solutions to the forced child labor problem in West Africa. With other members of the industry they support a study on the working conditions in 2000 Ivorian and 1000 Ghanian farms, two of the main cocoa-growing areas.

Cailler recognizes that child trafficking is a practice, which is not acceptable and is cooperating with the relevant United Nations agencies, governments, appropriate organizations of civil society and the business community in efforts to eradicate the abuse of children.
